Fewer oscillations would indicate a faulty coil. The actual reason it can start is the engine only stops at 1 or 2 positions. You can tell misfiring because your Ford will feel like it's going to stall when idling. Sometimes, drivers also heard ticking or clunking noise from the cylinder head or engine kept overheating due to leaking coolant. Bob suggested that if the pickup coil is suspect, one could take a VOM and measure continuity from one wire to the other of the 2 wire pickup coil connector ( it comes out of the side of the distributor, unplug it and connect to the end which goes into the distributor), while heating the coil assembly with a hair dryer. If the light doesn't blink, the ignition module is not firing the coil.
